Sarah Palin Says She Fears For Her Rights

In a conservative radio interview that aired in Washington, D.C. Friday morning, Republican vice presidential nominee Gov. Sarah Palin said she fears her First Amendment rights may be threatened by "attacks" from reporters who suggest she is engaging in a negative campaign against Barack Obama.

Palin told WMAL-AM that her criticism of Obama's associations, like those with 1960s radical Bill Ayers and the Rev. Jeremiah Wright, should not be considered negative attacks. Rather, for reporters or columnists to suggest that it is going negative may constitute an attack that threatens a candidate's free speech rights under the Constitution, Palin said.

"If [the media] convince enough voters that that is negative campaigning, for me to call Barack Obama out on his associations," Palin told host Chris Plante, "then I don't know what the future of our country would be in terms of First Amendment rights and our ability to ask questions without fear of attacks by the mainstream media."

Salon's Glenn Greenwald explains why this argument is frighteningly wrong:

If anything, Palin has this exactly backwards, since one thing that the First Amendment does actually guarantee is a free press. Thus, when the press criticizes a political candidate and a Governor such as Palin, that is a classic example of First Amendment rights being exercised, not abridged.

This isn't only about profound ignorance regarding our basic liberties, though it is obviously that. Palin here is also giving voice here to the standard right-wing grievance instinct: that it's inherently unfair when they're criticized. And now, apparently, it's even unconstitutional.

According to Palin, what the Founders intended with the First Amendment was that political candidates for the most powerful offices in the country and Governors of states would be free to say whatever they want without being criticized in the newspapers. The First Amendment was meant to ensure that powerful political officials would not be "attacked" in the papers. It is even possible to imagine more breathaking ignorance from someone holding high office and running for even higher office?

I don't care if Sarah Palin wants to get on a national stage, open her mouth and show the world how stupid she is. That is as much her right as anyone else. But, she has to remember, that while she has a right to sling mud, the media has a responsibility to report on it, which also will include criticism.

Sarah wants special treatment.

I Met Some Soldiers Today

It was very interesting indeed.

Most of them were very cordial and happy to be in my community. We were hosting them as they recovered from their injuries in Iraq and Afghanistan. It was a very enjoyable evening for me, a navy veteran, and hopefully for them.

As I spoke with them about their individual circumstances, I noticed a common thread. Not a single one of them could give a clear definition of the goal for the combat in which they engaged. Not one.

One kid was from Indiana. He said, betwen the "F" bombs, that he was just happy to get out alive. He was a real soldier and would have been willing to die for the cause, and he is glad that he didn't have to.

Another common thread.

Not a single one of them are voting for McCain/Palin and all support Obama/Biden. This was 27 war vets that said that they truste Obama to get them and their felow soldiers out of their alive before they trusted McCain.

Amazing stuff.

I had my second interview with another company today. I think I did well enough, but wish I would have hit it out of the park. Alas, that is what one year and a few months away from your specialty will do for you. I have officially become a "corporate wanker". I want to know who the writer was for this stupid fucking commercial from the Reich wing that has a guy saying how he wants to grow his business by 20-30 employees but he won't if Obama gets elected because Obama knows nothing of running a business. Ummmmm. Excuse me dickhead, firstly, if you want to cut your nose off to spite your face, go right ahead. Every business person I know will still be growing their business regardless of who gets elected president. Secondly, exactly what the fuck does John McCain know about running a business? He was a naval aviator, then a politician. Those were his two jobs. No private business there. Even George W. Bush has more business experience than John McCain, and that speaks volumes. So this is my third or fourth attempt to create a blog.

It seems everyone has a blog, and I want to be part of the "in crowd", too.

While this blog may lean towards politics, it is by no means the focal point. Some days I will be discussing my job, my neighbors, or sports, or any other subject under the sun.

I am sitting in front of my new 37" LCD tv (great for the xbox) watching Keith Olberman shred Flush Limbaugh (the druggie) and Bill O'Liely. I cannot wait to listen to Flush and watch Billy on Nov. 5th as the dems take the White House, the Senate, and the House of Representatives. Hopefully the dems will take the majority of local elections accross the U.S.A. , as well.

Now that it looks like the Dems will have control of both houses and the White House, it is my hope they don't find a way to fuck it all up, as they have been known to do in the past. However, there are a few people that I would like to see be indicted for crimes against humanity by our new congress like George W. Bush, Donald Rumsfeld, Condi Rice, and Dick (head) Cheney. To start.

The Governor of Florida has decided that it would be a good idea to expand early voting hours from 8 to 12 a day. Of course, 2 million people have excersized their right to vote already in the state of Florida. Maybe Gov. Crist isn't too sold on McSame/Stalin. Or maybe he realizes the mad rush that would happen on Nov. 4th if he didn't make early voting here easier.
